Fontana NMBS Part 2

The Real Racers Hit The Course

I tried downhill last November. I had always wanted to do it, and thought that I might be pretty good. I mean, I always make up time on technical downhill sections in XC races, so how could it be that different? Well, it turns out that it’s a whole bunch different. Really a lot different. More differenter than you hardly believe it is. That, coupled with being a spectator at a few pro downhill races undoubtedly has given me a new appreciation for these guys’ skills. They are absolutely as talented and athletic as any racer in any other dicipline in competitive cycling.

It ended up being an all Aussie and Kiwi podium with Cris Kovaric in 1st followed by Nathan Rennie and Justin Leov in 2nd and 3rd. The most impressive thing is that Kovaric won by almost 3 seconds. We heard that he had been living in SoCal in the off season and training at Southridge. His course knowledge was strong and his form impressive. Given the depth of talent in the Pro DH field in Fontana, he’s set up to make some noise in the NMBS and UCI World Cup this year.
